Cupping and Acupuncture – a therapeutic treatment.

I have heard that this technique is used across Europe – and is traditionally used for sprained backs. In Chinese Medicine ‘cupping’ is can be used for so much more.

How does it work I hear you ask?

The glass ‘cups’ are used for creating a slight suction on the skin, over the area that is being treated. This can be created in several ways: by a vacuum pump; by having a rubber suction cup; by using cotton dipped in surgical spirit – which is used to warm the air in the suction cup, or by using warm water.

What is it used to Treat?

There are many uses for cupping.

  • It is used over injured muscles and helps increase the flow of blood to the area – thus helping repair.
  • It can be used for a sudden crick in the neck, or for a sudden back pain.
  • Interestingly enough it can be used to treat colds . . .
  • Finally it can be used to massage an area – and is very relaxing and invigorating.

There is a point that does need to be raised – it leave temporary unsightly marks (small bruises)  – unless you are a star and wear them with pride (see photo of Gwyneth Paltrow)- this is particularly the case if there is injury and scar tissue where the blood flow is inhibited, and if strong techniques (such as fire cupping are used).

Cupping is one of many skills that an acupuncturist can use. Other realated skills are Moxa – the use of warming herbs, and the lovely skill of Massage.

Many thanks
